Hot Springs NC campground options cover more ground than you’d expect for a town this size — and the best Hot Springs NC campground for you depends entirely on what kind of camper you are. From riverside tent sites on the French Broad River to national forest campgrounds tucked into Spring Creek Gorge, backcountry AT camping, and full glamping properties on the French Broad — the area around Hot Springs has something for every kind of camper. Here’s what’s actually available, what reviewers say about each, and how to book.

Hot Springs Resort & Spa Campground

315 Bridge St, Hot Springs · On the French Broad River

Camping near the French Broad River at Hot Springs NC campground with Appalachian Trail access

The most popular Hot Springs NC campground by a wide margin — and the most convenient. The Hot Springs Resort & Spa campground sits on 100 acres directly on the French Broad River, right where the Appalachian Trail crosses through town. You can walk from your tent to Bridge Street restaurants, the AT trailhead, and the mineral spring soaking pools without getting in your car. For a campground, that combination is almost unmatched.

The campground offers over 100 tent sites — including primitive riverside sites, group tent sites with electrical hookup, and sites with partial hookup — plus full RV hookups and eight primitive camping cabins. The star is site F1, a riverside group deluxe tent site that one blogger from Charlotte described as “hands down the best campsite we’ve ever had” — two picnic tables, fire pit ring, water spigot, electrical hookup, and the French Broad River right outside your tent. Reservations for peak weekends fill well in advance.

Across Tripadvisor, Campendium, and The Dyrt, the consistent themes are: the riverside tent sites are spectacular, the proximity to town is unbeatable, the bathhouses are dated but functional, and campers who stay here tend to return. One Tripadvisor reviewer who has brought their family for over a decade wrote: “Great car camping along a beautiful river in a small mountain town. Bathhouses are typically clean. Great place to go, relax and drink a beer without worries.” Another: “You can float the river, hike the Appalachian Trail, soak in hot mineral springs, get a massage, walk through town and hear great music most nights.” RV campers on Campendium note it’s one of the few campgrounds where you can park and walk into town — and that campers get a discount on the mineral soaking pools across the road.

One note on RV access: the approach via NC-25 involves switchbacks and steep grades — come from Asheville on I-26 or approach from I-40 for the easiest route. Hot showers are seasonal. Late-night train noise from the tracks bordering the property gets mentioned occasionally — worth knowing.

The quieter Hot Springs NC campground alternative — Rocky Bluff sits 3 miles south of town on NC-209 in the Spring Creek Gorge, managed by Pisgah National Forest. Eighteen rustic campsites designed for tent and passenger car camping, each with picnic table, tent pad, lantern post, and campfire ring with grill. Potable water throughout. Spring Creek — a North Carolina Mountain Heritage Trout Water stocked with brook, brown, and rainbow trout — runs through the property, making it one of the better fishing camps in Madison County.

Three trailheads originate from the campground itself, and the AT in Hot Springs is just 3 miles north. On The Dyrt, one reviewer wrote: “What a fabulous find. I wandered here during the night…” — enough said. The campground sits in a wooded setting that earns consistent high marks for scenery, quiet, and site quality. Campendium’s aggregate ratings give it 5 stars across location, access, and cleanliness.

Important: Rocky Bluff is gated with a combination lock. The code is provided with your reservation — don’t lose it, the district office cannot give it out again. Hot Springs, NC · 160 acres on the French Broad River

paint rock farm glamping hot springs nc campground

The most distinctive glamping and Hot Springs NC campground alternative in the area. Paint Rock Farm sits on 160 acres of private land adjacent to the French Broad River — 30 acres of meadow and 130 acres of private conservation forest — named after Paint Rock and the Cherokee Paint Rock Clan. The property offers river-view glamping cabins, a tiny house, primitive camping, and RV sites, all centered around a restored barn with community kitchen, large fire pit, heated bathhouse, and outdoor showers. Miles of meadow and forest trails run directly from the property.

Hipcamp reviewers are consistently enthusiastic. One June 2025 review of River Perch Cabin #6: “Incredible outdoor experience! Exquisite property with a ton of great hiking trails — my partner and I stayed in a river view cabin. The common space in the barn is great and the shower and restroom facilities were top notch.” Another: “Outstanding location and lodging. Everything was perfect. Peaceful, beautiful and now fully recharged.”

Camping Near Max Patch

AT Corridor · Hot Springs to Max Patch · Dispersed Camping

camping near max patch hot springs nc

For backcountry campers, the AT corridor between Hot Springs and Max Patch offers multiple dispersed camping options on national forest land. Camping is not permitted on the Max Patch bald itself — leave-no-trace regulations protect the summit — but sites just off the bald are available, and the views from nearby ridgeline camps at sunrise are worth the extra effort to find a spot. The Harmon Den area and Murray Branch Recreation Area also offer primitive camping opportunities in this corridor. Check fs.usda.gov for current dispersed camping regulations and fire restrictions before heading out.

Hurricane Helene caused significant damage to the Hot Springs area in late 2024. Most campgrounds have confirmed reopened operations, but conditions at some facilities may still vary.
